We anticipate approximately 6-8 hours per month of participation, mostly dedicated to keeping up with correspondence and outreach. There will be one meeting per calendar quarter, with each meeting lasting approximately two hours. Additionally, we may also have 1-2 strategic planning sessions per year. These are typically weekend events, and can last anywhere from 3 to 8 hours. Board members must attend strategic planning sessions. Board members may also be asked upon occasion to participate on subcommittees for specific tasks.

​​Each individual Board Member is expected to:

​

• Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs as well as understand its collective purpose

• Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings

• Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization

• Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission

• Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission

• Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and influence public policy

• Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings

• Participate fully in one or more committees or taskforces

• Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve

• Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization

• Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions

• Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization

Currently we're seeking the following Board Members:

​

Vice President (Board Member, elected position)

The Vice President is the visionary of the group, and we're specifically seeking someone with a legal background. This person is free to set up a committee that can seek out new and dynamic ways to progress our impact, make connections with other organizations around the region, and make sure that Board and volunteers are working together to meet the mission of the organization. This position requires enthusiasm for the Laws Saving Paws mission, motivation, creativity, and effective communication skills.

 

Additional duties of the Vice President may include:

• Running board meetings as requested and in the board president’s absence

• Serving as the nonprofit’s spokesperson as needed

• Assisting with board president duties

• Completing special duties as requested

Secretary (Board Member, elected position)

As a member of the Board, the Secretary coordinates the Board meetings and prepares and distributes Board meeting agendas and minutes. Activities of this position include, but are not limited to: compiling monthly Board meeting agendas; recording notes of monthly Board meetings; distributing Board meeting minutes to Board members. This position requires effective communication and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.

Additional duties of the Secretary may include:

• Scheduling board meetings

• Assisting in board member orientation

• Taking attendance at board meetings

• Taking accurate meeting minutes and getting them approved

• Maintaining board records

• Ensuring secure storage of official board documents and contracts

• Tracking board member terms

• Monitoring legal compliance

Treasurer (Board Member, elected position)

The Treasurer ensures the finances are in order for the organization. As the Treasurer, they ensure that deposits are made, bills are paid on time, and all IRS and State-required tax reports are filed properly. He or she prepares Laws Saving Paws financial statements and keeps the financial records and books up to date (or oversees these functions). The Treasurer also keeps the list of all PAW financial donors, insures that donation notifications are sent to all donors in a timely manner. This position requires accounting and financial-planning skills and experience, attention to detail, and effective communication skills.

Additional duties of the Treasurer may include:

• Managing the budget

• Taking the lead in the annual audit

• Answering questions about the audit

• Chairing the finance committee (if applicable)​​
